Cut Chemist - The Audience's Listening - 2006 - This long-awaited full-length CD from hip-hopper/mixer Cut Chemist really is a great and listenable product. Unpredictable, full of diverse samples, change-up styles and beats, the tracks display the full array of Chemist's broad musical influences and background. Will every cut make the iPod? Maybe, maybe not. But its a good bet a majority will. More good music courtesy of ADD Marketing up in LA.
Nightmares On Wax - In A Space Outta Sound - 2006 - Do you know this guys? Wow - We must be OTB because we just got turned on to this group of electronic hip hoppers whose claim to fame is no vocals, just good down home grooves. Not club, not dub. Anyway, this is some great stuff, whatever you're doing and into. Can a band whose musical category is "electronica" have chops? It would seem so.
Jurassic-5 - Feedback - 2006 - Whether or not you think these guys sold out, or got too popular, or like their guest appearances, or are better (probably not) or worse (maybe) without Cut Chemist, Jurassic-5 still puts out good authentic hip hop that is sans all the look-at-me BS, all too frequently found consuming this genre. Fine music, head bobbing beats, clear and clever lyrics - and all packaged so that it can be played - at any volume. So relax rap snobs. Free your mind, and your booty will follow. Thanks for the hook - The Lunch Program
Kumquats & Apricots - 2006 - A compilation of some of The Militia Group's best artists, this CD arrived courtesy of our friends up in LA-based ADD Marketing, and it full of fresh young SoCal talent. With an eye on real musicianship without all the clutter and nonsense, The Militia Group delivers the likes of bands like Brandtson, Controlling the Famous and Umbrellas, to name a few. Each different, each good and very, very listenable. Not sure if this compilation is available to the public, but it is a solid bet and worth your time to seek out this production company and its musicians.
Cream - Royal Albert Hall -
2005 - Recorded live in London May 2-5, this double CD is a masterful piece of work. Yeah, Cream. That same incredible 60's trio of Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker who put out so much musically brilliant work - work that influenced everything. Those old guys are still around? Yeah, and they cook on this. Don't let the wrinkles fool you - if anything, each of these great musicians is better than ever. Why wouldn't they be? Well filmed, this is also available as a DVD. Without question, music for any generation.
Frequent Flyer - Kingston, Jamaica -
2005 - Released in May of 05 on Kinkysweet Recordings this an excellent double CD compilation that is a great mix of dub/reggae/electronica throughout. What is so nice about this mix is what it isn't. It isn't that late night put-me-to-sleep-deep-trance-dub stuff; it's solid island-style groove brought to you by a variety of greats including Dubtribe Sound System, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Fila Brazillia and the great Bob Marley himself. Smilin', head-bobin' and foot-tappin', you can almost taste the salt in the warm, balmy air.
